Other signs: the dryer cabinet and the clothes are hot to the touch, the laundry room feels humid and smells scorched, and the outside flapper barely opens when the machine is running. Lint collecting around the door seal or on the floor behind the unit points the same direction. If the machine shuts itself off partway through, the thermal limit is tripping and the run is choked.

Walk me through what happens during the appointment.
We pull the dryer out, disconnect the transition hose, and look at the whole path from the machine to the exterior cap. A rotary brush on a flexible rod goes through the duct while a vacuum captures what comes loose, so lint does not end up on your laundry room floor. We clear the exterior hood and check that the damper swings freely. Then the dryer gets reconnected, we run it, and we measure airflow at the outside termination so you can see the difference. How much time should I set aside?

What makes one dryer vent cleaning cost more than another?
Length and shape of the run drive it. A garage-corner dryer in a 1920s bungalow venting through the nearest wall is simple work. A second-floor laundry room venting up to the roof means ladder work and a two-end approach, and that job is priced differently. Elbows count too, since every turn is a place lint packs in. Is my problem the vent or the dryer itself?
Here is the quick test. Pull the transition hose off the back of the dryer and run the machine on a timed cycle for a few minutes. Strong warm air out the back means the dryer is fine and the duct is the restriction. Weak or cool air means the heating element, thermostat or blower needs a repair tech, not us. Does it matter whether the duct is rigid metal or flexible?
It matters a lot. Rigid metal has smooth walls, so lint keeps moving instead of catching. Flexible foil and vinyl have ridges that grab lint, they sag between supports, and they crush flat when a dryer gets pushed back against the wall. Vinyl should not be in a dryer line at all. We see plenty of it behind machines in older houses and in garden apartment laundry closets, and we recommend rigid metal for the full run with a short listed metal transition connector at the machine.

What if a bird or rodent has nested in my vent?
We remove it. A damper that stopped closing is an open invitation, and Dallas exterior hoods take a beating from spring storm season wind and driven rain, which is often what breaks the flapper in the first place. We clear the nest and debris out of the duct, clean the run behind it, then install a proper hood with a working damper or a pest guard that does not trap lint. Skipping the cap replacement just means the same tenant moves back in next season.

My vent run is really long. Can it be shortened or helped along?
Sometimes. On 1970s and 80s split-levels and two-story tract homes, the laundry often sits far from any exterior wall, and the duct wanders. If there is a shorter path through an attic, a chase or a soffit, rerouting is usually the better fix because it removes elbows too. Where the layout will not allow a shorter route, an inline booster fan with a pressure switch can carry the load, though it still needs regular cleaning. We look at the actual framing before recommending either, and clay soil shifting with wet and dry cycles moves house frames here, so we check for joints that have pulled apart.
